Physical Education
PE Statement of Intent
At St. Leonard’s, our intent is for children to experience a high-quality and engaging curriculum that to support their physical development, personal, social and emotional development and contribute to completing 60 active minutes a day. We offer a broad curriculum as well as providing children with opportunities to compete in sports within our own school as well as with other schools through the School Games and local fixtures. This enables us to teach and promote good sportsmanship, follow the Olympic Values and help children to understand healthy competition. We aim to provide our children with a positive experience of physical education that will lead to a healthy lifestyle and life-long participation.

PE Policy
PE Policy January 2028.pdfDevelopment Areas for 2025-2026
In PE this year our key areas for improvement are:
- To develop opportunities for children to pursue physical education outside of their PE lessons, e.g. OPAL
- To enhance the dance and expressive arts area of the PE curriculum
- To build links with community sports clubs and sign post pupils to activities outside of school
Incorporating Physical Education into Your Home Education Routine:
- Make physical activity a priority – schedule time for physical activity every day. This could be walking, scooting or cycling to school or even parking a little further from school so that each day involves a short walk to and from school. Take part in the daily mile, Park Run on Saturdays or Junior Park Run on Sundays.
- Mix it up – try different activities and sports to keep things interesting and challenging for your child. Encourage them to try new things and find activities they enjoy.
- Get outdoors – nature offers endless opportunities for physical activity and exploration. Take advantage of local parks, nature reserves, and walking trails.
- Involve the whole family – physical activity is more fun when everyone gets involved. Encourage siblings and parents to participate in activities together.
- Use technology – there are many online resources and apps available that can make physical activity more fun and engaging for children. From dance games to fitness trackers, technology can be a great tool for promoting physical activity and healthy habits. For example, PE with Joe Workouts, Go Noodle and Cosmic Yoga on YouTube.
Extra-curricular activities:
Paris 2024 Olympic Game Celebrations:
To celebrate the introduction of break dancing to the Paris 2024 Olympics, each class participated in break dancing workshop with a local dancer.
The children also participated in a whole school challenge, 'Path to Paris', where each class competed against each other to completed the most active minutes outside of school.
WOW Active
St Leonard's children have been taking part in the WOW Active programme to develop their fitness, self confidence and perseverance. In each termly session the children complete the same personal best style challenges to see how much they have improved over the year.
Boogie Bounce
St Leonard's had a vey exciting opportunity to trial and be part of the filming of a new programme for Boogie Bounce. This is a programme that is being rolled out across the UK to enhance the fitness and dance aspect of the PE curriculum. The children all worked exceptionally hard and put on their best smiles for the cameras!
The Biggest Ever Football Session
St Leonard's took part in the Biggest Ever Football Session to support the Let Girls Play campaign and to show that football is for everyone. A record-breaking 465,000 girls from 5000 schools across England took part in this- what an amazing thing to be a part of!
The day began with our St Leonard's Lionesses teaching us about the campaign and how we can be allies to support inclusivity in football. Each class had a session outside to learn and share their amazing football skills. Everyone also took part in an inclusive poster competition! The winners will be announced when we come back after Easter.
